UiTM-MCH Homestay Programme at Bakun

Twenty-six students from UiTM will had a chance of a lifetime when they began their stay in the homes of the Orang Ulu communities in Sarawak for a whole week from 12-18 December 2008.

Styled after a tourism-oriented homestay programme the students will spend their time discovering Sarawak’s “indigenous treasures” in culture, handicraft, food, ethnic costumes, folk lore, customs, dance, dialects and more.

During a briefing session at UiTM for the participating students held recently, Shaleh said that the programme was a dynamic way for the students to learn a different culture and lifestyle.

Many of the local ethnic groups live in long houses in two key settlements called Sungai Asap and Belaga. The former has about 10, 000 residents while the latter has close to 6000 households located predominantly along the river. These communities settled there when the Bakun dam first began construction in the early ‘80s.

The programme also provides training opportunities for potential 'homestay operators' to enhance their organisational skills in basic “how-to” in tourism management. Their long houses and local culture are a boon and a novel attraction to tourists both local and foreign.

Other guests included the Deputy Minister of Rural Development Sarawak, Sarawak's Director of the Department of National Culture and Heritage together with the District Officer of Belaga.

This coincided with UiTM-MCH, Homestay Programe, 12-18 December. It was during this occasion too that the Head of the Orang Ulu, Pemanca Umek Jeno, honoured Baharudin as, "A friend of the Orang Ulu"

The homestay week is part of Malaysia-China Hydro Joint Venture’s (MCHJV) -- contractors of the Bakun dam -- commitment to community development and share a joint role with UiTM in organising and sponsoring the week-long event that is packed with handicraft making sessions and eco-friendly activities.

“The overwhelming response from students, teachers and the Orang Ulu has indeed determined the future and continuity of the Bakun homestay programme. There were more volunteers from among the students to participate in the homestay than there are places to accommodate them," said Capt Baharuddin Abdul Jalil, MCH Public Relations Manager.

“There is no dearth to the local talent and skills which we should try to preserve for the long term and take advantage of for economic reasons,” explained Shaleh Mujir, senior lecturer in the Industrial Design Department, Faculty of Art & Design at UiTM and who is responsible for spearheading the programme.
