Events Archive - Bakun Township Gets Its Own Pasar Tani (Marketplace).

Another amenity has been added to the new township of Bakun , site of the world's largest rockfill dam and ‘home' to some 3,000 workers. Presently there is a Police Base and basic recreational facilities.

Known as Bakun Pasar Tani, the residents and employees are now able to buy local produce and fare. The marketplace was officially inaugurated by Sulaihah Maimunni, managing director of Sarawak Hidro Sdn Bhd, overseeing cevelopment of the Bakun dam.

The opening of the pasar tani was well received by the communities settled in and surrounding Bakun because towns are dispersed, making distance and transport difficult considerations.

Milestone: 8 March 2006, Cik Sulaihah Maimunni, managing director of Sarawak Hidro Sdn Bhd did the inaugural opening of Bakun Pasar Tani. With her is Pemanca Umek Jeno, community leader of Bakun.

For a start, ten booths were constructed for the market. Initiating the pasar tani project is Malaysia China Hydro Joint Venture, contractors of the dam. Open daily from 7:00 am till noon, vendors can rent these booths at a reasonable price, to trade necessity goods, handcraft items and food items.

According to Encik Awang Narudin , MCH JV liaison officer: “The response received from the people in Bakun has been most encouraging that we have set up a roster for all, to accommodate the vendors on a rotational basis. There just isn't enough space.
