Another
amenity has been added to the new township
of Bakun , site of the world's largest rockfill dam
and ‘home' to some 3,000 workers. Presently
there is a Police Base and basic recreational facilities.
Known as Bakun
Pasar Tani, the residents and employees
are now able to buy local produce and fare. The
marketplace was officially inaugurated
by Sulaihah Maimunni, managing director of Sarawak
Hidro Sdn Bhd, overseeing cevelopment of the Bakun
dam.
The opening of the pasar tani was well received
by the communities settled in and surrounding Bakun
because towns are dispersed, making distance and
transport difficult considerations.

For a start, ten booths were constructed for the
market. Initiating the pasar tani project is Malaysia
China Hydro Joint Venture, contractors of the dam.
Open daily from 7:00 am till noon, vendors can rent
these booths at a reasonable price, to trade necessity
goods, handcraft items and food items.
According
to Encik Awang Narudin , MCH JV liaison officer: “The
response received from the people in Bakun has
been most encouraging that we have set up a roster
for all, to accommodate the vendors on a rotational
basis. There just isn't enough space. |
